There are distinct theories about the main differences between people’s attitudes and capacities, which clearly tend to contrasting consequences. As we have seen in the Ted talk, IQ is for instance an important issue but it is not fully determinant as IQ does not completely shape someone’s intelligence, other issues like capacities and talents need to be part of the broad analysis that must be accomplished. There are several factors that must be taken into account like someone’s potential, perseverance, constancy, motivation…
It is said that the most clever kids aren’t usually the best at studying, as it is known that there are several kinds of intelligence. Numbers do not determine the intelligence of someone although they can be a good point of reference. We may discuss whether the best students or workers are the ones that work their hardest to achieve their goals, some of them may spend much more effort than others but those who are insistent with their goals have high probabilities of succeeding in life.
In the professional field having grit and perseverance is more significant than having a certain facility to accomplish any task. An excellent example is the well known spanish tennis player Rafa Nadal. It is an evidence that the Majorcan sportsman was born with an inherited talent to play tennis. Although, without all the effort he has made training throughout his life, it would never have been possible for him to become one of the best tennis players in the world and the best sportsman of the history of Spain. For that reason, and may other reasons, Angela Lee Duckworth believes success can never be reached without hard work and perseverance , that is, we can say, grit.
What makes a difference in this kind of people is grit, that we define it as the strength of someone’s character. People who are gritty are those that finish all their obligations regardless the difficulties that come up. Nevertheless, sometimes greed could take control of them in the path of achieving a proposed goal. The definition of greed tells us: “it is the intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth or power”, this attitude might be confused with grit. We should be aware that greed makes a person to fully focus on itself rather than other people’s issues. This is an obvious reflection of the fact that they are not ethical towards other colleagues.
In conclusion, there is a clear difference between grit and greed. Both let you carry your objectives out but do it in a different way. As we have previously said, greed may lead you to a selfish personality. On the other hand, grit helps you to maintain the persistence in your goals until accomplishing them without the necessity of stepping on others’ professional careers
